Angelina + Michael: A cottage-core dream at The Secret Garden in Bodega Bay

Let me set the stage for you: It’s the weekend of September 13, 2024, and I’m heading to Bodega Bay, California, to photograph a stunning wedding. My journey began in Taos, New Mexico, with a drive to the Albuquerque airport. Once I landed in San Francisco, I rented my first electric BMW i3—a decision I was thrilled about. Gas prices in California are notoriously high, and I figured a compact, zippy car would be perfect for navigating the crowded highways and charming coastal streets.

Pro Tip for Electric Car Rentals:

Always bring a long extension cord! I learned this the hard way. I couldn’t charge the car before heading into Sonoma County, and by morning, I was met with all sorts of warning signs. Shoutout to my incredibly patient Turo host, who worked with me to troubleshoot. After hours of phone calls, walking streets in search of supplies, and contacting local friends, I reached out to Donis, the venue manager at The Secret Garden—the same magical spot where my husband Chris and I got married in 2019.

The Secret Garden is truly a hidden gem nestled off Highway 1 in Sonoma County. This enchanting Redwood grove, complete with a babbling creek and lush greenery, holds a special place in my heart. It’s where Chris and I said "I do," and we’ve returned to the area often for its coastal charm and amazing seafood. When Angelina and Michael of Oakland, CA, reached out about photographing their wedding here, I was thrilled.

Angelina and Michael had been together for seven years when we first connected. Angelina found me through The Secret Garden’s website and loved my style, describing it as “90% candid with an artistic flair.” We hit it off immediately. The couple opted for one of my wedding packages, which included a lifestyle portrait session for their website and invitations. Shooting their engagement photos in the spring gave us a chance to bond and allowed me to capture their authentic connection—snuggling, laughing, and flirting in their neighborhood.

The Wedding Weekend

The festivities began at the Jenner Inn, a dreamy retreat just 15 minutes from the venue. Despite my electric car fiasco, I made it to the rehearsal dinner, capturing pre-wedding moments as the couple celebrated with their loved ones. The next morning, Chris and I joined Angelina and Michael at the inn for getting-ready photos. Jenner is a magical coastal town, with its ethereal mist and serene beauty setting the tone for the day.

Angelina’s style was breathtaking—she embodied a Renaissance-era Italian actress with a cottagecore twist. Her gown was paired with delicate florals in her hair, sheer embroidered gloves, and an aura of timeless elegance. The wedding decor was equally enchanting, blending the natural beauty of the venue with whimsical touches to create a fairytale-like atmosphere.

Capturing their day felt like a dream. From the intimate moments during their vows to the candid joy of their reception, my role was to document the magic as it unfolded. It was particularly meaningful for Chris and me to photograph another couple’s love story at the same place where our own began.

If you’re considering a wedding at The Secret Garden, I would love to photograph your special day. This venue is close to my heart, and I even offer a custom package specifically for this location. Reach out, and let’s create something unforgettable!
